Be Healthy in 2013!!

As the new year begins, I can’t help but notice that EVERYONE IS SICK!! People on social media are talking about how sick they are, the news is reporting how the flu is now an epidemic, and everywhere I look people are coughing, sneezing, and wheezing!  I want to take a moment to let you know WHY you might be sick and how to AVOID getting sick in the future.  Let’s be honest-who wants to be sick & who has the time?

*Sugar

You may not know this, but sugar will SUPPRESS your immune system. Sugar decreases your body’s ability to attack bacteria. Eating just 75 -100 grams of sugar can decrease the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria that can make you sick. Be aware of how much sugar you are consuming!  Also keep in mind that sugar does NOT only come from cakes, cookies & pie.  Carbohydrates convert to sugar, so monitor all sources of carbohydrate intake including pasta, rice, bread, etc.

*Nutrition

A diet rich in nutrients can significantly boost immunity to help fight infection.  These are found in citrus fruits, kale, spinach, carrots, etc. Basically, make sure you are eating your fruits and veggies!  Find yourself too busy to eat properly? Whole food supplements are a huge benefit. Notice I said WHOLE FOOD – this is important because not all supplements (vitamins) are plant based! Just like the food we eat can be processed with chemicals, so can vitamins (and they often are)! To give your body the best nutrition possible, make sure your supplement is whole food based. Just as you wouldn’t expect your car to run without gas, your body cannot properly function without nutrients! (We will talk more in-depth on this subject in future blogs. Stay tuned!)

*Adequate sleep

Fatigue greatly increases your chances of getting sick. It is imperative that adults sleep 7-9 hours every night. So DVR your favorite show if you have to – if you want your immune system to operate to the best of its ability, you must give your body the rest it needs!

There are a lot more things that you can do to stay healthy, but these are the things that can and will directly influence your immune system. I want my family, friends, and patients healthy in 2013!
