Why You Need Whole Food Supplements

I think it’s safe to say that most people who are concerned about staying healthy take some sort of daily supplement or vitamin. The problem is, not all vitamins and supplements are created equal!

To the untrained eye they seem to be, but labels can (and often do) mislead consumers into thinking bigger is better.

Do you remember the eye-opening documentary “Super-Size Me?”  If you don’t, Google it. We need to understand that quality is so much better than quantity – and this most certainly applies to your daily supplements!

Let’s be honest, we all have tendencies to eat convenient (fast) foods that have little or no nutritional value as our schedules get busier and busier. So taking supplements or multivitamins to help us maintain our health makes us feel better about it.  CONSIDER THIS: Where do the nutrients in your vitamins come from? And is it doing its job to replace the missing nutrients from your diet?

There are some very important factors to consider when choosing the right nutritional supplements. The most important factor is the source of RAW materials – Is it Whole Food Based?

When comparing the labels on any nutritional supplement, always examine the source of the ingredients. Manmade compounds, like those found in typical retail multivitamins are often just synthetic forms of the vitamins and minerals we need. Would you eat a synthetic piece of broccoli? What about a synthetic carrot?  I hope not!  So make sure your supplement is from WHOLE FOOD sources with all natural ingredients!  Most doctors with advanced nutritional training & a thorough understanding of physiology will tell you that a small amount of a whole food source (quality) is better than large amounts of synthetic vitamins (quantity)!

If you are unsure about whether the supplement you are taking is in all-natural, whole food forms please do not hesitate to contact me! I am always here to answer any questions you may have regarding your nutrition, because I want my patients to be well-informed about nutrition and achieve the best health possible!
